Get Out & Vote.

Special treat for you guys today! One of my dearest friends, Katie, wrote today's post. She is a constant source of inspiration for me - from her personal style (like this pink suit!) and demeanor, to her whit and whimsy, to how she views the world - and better yet, what she does to help make it a better place, and so much more. Because of all that, and that she has worked in government at both the state and federal level for more than a decade, and now works in D.C. for a nonprofit focusing on education policy, I thought she was the perfect person for a voting pep talk. :)

Oh, and her fabulous style (more of that at the bottom).

I recently read a comment by a blogger I follow, who said she doesn’t share her political views on her platform because: “I don’t feel this should be a factor in why people choose to like me or not.” While I disagree with her premise, I respect her decision to choose to share the content she wishes. Megan and I have been talking over the last couple of weeks about how to use this space, and she asked me to share some thoughts with you about why we hope you consider exercising your right to vote next week (Tuesday, November 6th) - regardless of the vote you cast.

Since the birth of our country, voting has been an action that the powerful have tried to manipulate in a myriad of ways - from outright bans for certain segments of the population (ahem women, minorities) to Jim Crow laws, party machines, and modern day voter suppression efforts. If so many people are interested in taking this right away it must mean that voting is important! Decisions made by our elected policymakers at every level of government affect every aspect of our lives, whether you like it or not. I’m sure each of us has at least one issue that we care deeply about - whether it is better education for our kids, safer roads so you can bike to work, equal pay so that your daughters have the same earning potential as your sons, public safety to protect women from sexual assault, affordable health care so that your family doesn’t face bankruptcy as our parents age or a family member experiences unexpected illness. And elected officials are making decisions on these issues each and every day.

And, as US Citizen without representation in Congress (shout out to my fellow District of Columbia residents!), I am truly jealous of your (those in the 50 states within this country) ability to make your voice heard on November 6th. Though many try to make voting hard, there are some easy steps you can take to get involved.
  1. Make a plan to vote. Do you know where your polling place is? Do you know the hours of voting? Do you have early voting in your area?
  2. Tell your boss/work that you need to take some time away to vote!  Can’t get away? There is still time to cast your vote early.
  3. Do some googling on the candidates. Which offices are on the ballot? Who are the candidates? What are their policy positions? The internet has made this very easy to figure out, and quickly!
  4. Just do it. Vote!

It seems pretty straightforward, right? (If you answered yes to that question - yay! But please be mindful that many of our neighbors voting still isn’t an easy process - maybe check in with your friends and family to see if there is anything you can do to help them stay enfranchised.) Our elected officials are a reflection of our values and priorities, and a chance to make your voice heard. I hope you will take time this election season to exercise your right to vote and shape the values and priorities of your community going forward. Every vote matters.

Not sure where to start googling? TheSkimm has created a No Excuses campaign with information for elections across the country and Rock the Vote is always a great resource for voting information. And who knows - maybe in the next election your name will be on the ballot, too! ;)

Favorite Wears: Summer Work Look

Sabbatical is over, and it's back to reality! I went back to work this past Monday and hit the ground running - including a trip to Nashville and Atlanta in two days.  After spending a month in mostly workout wear (to be fair, I was also working out a lot more), I'm looking for new inspiration and trying new things to get me back into the creative spirit with my personal style.

I always struggle with what to wear to work during the summer (well, maybe always, too)!  I have to dress for the warmer outside weather, but also the cooler office air conditioning.  I also struggle with making summer outfits feel interesting with the lack of layering and textures.  So, my first attempt was to play with the blush trend, pairing it with a full skirt of pattern!

I love gingham for spring/summer, and my immediate go to would be to pair it with white, so I like the blush to really draw attention to the pattern pop.  And these loafers are the most comfortable things to have happened to my feet. They are super light, soft and packable. I just wore them on my first post-sabbatical travels, and I can further attest (I know want them in every color)!

Tips for the Best Summer Workout Wear

Even though Winter has been lingering on in a lot of the US for far too long, I'm still thinking ahead about having the right athletic gear to keep my workout streak going into those hotter months.  This month, I had a goal to workout 20 times (and I'm well on my way - you can see my progress on Instagram Stories & highlights).

I love a good new workout outfit to keep me motivated, and great looking gear to get me excited about wearing them!  For me, the fit and feel of workout clothes are also very important - nothing distracts me more from a good workout that tugging down a shirt, or pulling up my pants. And clothes that itch or poke don't get a repeat wear.

So, I've rounded up some tips and favorite pieces that I've found to work great for me - specifically for warmer weather!

1. Find clothing with strategically placed mesh to keep your skin exposed to air for easier cooling down.  For my leggings, I love mesh behind my knees personally. And look for mesh on the back of or down the front of your sports bras to help keep cool under your shirt.  Some of my favorite mesh pieces for summer:

2. Breezy shirts with open backs and/or an open slit to cool off your back.  Other options are a longer, light and swing styled tops that are easy to cool off in. A crop styled sports bra  that is longer down the torso or crop top lets your midsection breath a bit:

3. Light colors and thinner, quick dry fabrics are key.  This is especially important if you are working out outdoors - and don't forget to wear sunscreen and UPF fabrics (like this tank) that help keep you safe from the sun.

4. Don't forget about what kind of underwear you wear! Quick dry, breathable and oder resistant will keep you even fresher, longer.  The brand I'm going to try out this summer (after some research!) is this one - they even have mens styles and comes in lots of cuts!

5. Get shoes that are light weight and made with breathable fabrics.  I have loved love Adidas Ultra Boost for awhile, and recently loving Nike LunarEpic sneaks - both come in loads of color options:

Favorite Wears: Red Hues for Summer into Fall

It was a particularly sunny day (it's been a pretty sunny start to fall here in Kansas City) when we were snapping this outfit that I wore to work, so excuse the weird shadows. But, I just love this look for transitioning from summer to fall, and working with layers for cooler mornings, into hotter afternoons.  Plus, my office stays pretty cool, so my jacket typically stays on while inside even!

I especially love mixing hues that are all part of the same color family. So this outfit is med up of red, blush and maroon - with black a neutral pop and anchor.  What are your favorite color-family looks?

Favorite Wears: Summer Work Wear

This particular Monday is going to be brutal. Coming off of a week long vacation, over a holiday, with two young kids on the road, and a ton going on back at work (is there ever a good time to take a vacation??), I know I'm going to pay for it today.

But, vacation is always worth it - especially family trips. As happy I am to get my kids back on a schedule (and to not share a room with them), I enjoyed the extra time with them - especially experiencing new things.  My own family was also with us (my mom, dad and sister), which helped a ton (more adults to kids is always the way to go), but it was wonderful spending lots of quality time with them, too.  I'll have more on our trip coming up soon!

So, now as I wash all my vacation clothes, I'm sharing a favorite summer work look here today.  I could wear white for every occasion all summer long (except a wedding of course...), and I love this more professional looking style for the office. This particular dress is sold out, but sharing several similar and cute options below!

P.S. tip to wearing undergarments under white - you actually want to wear nude colored ones, and not white. White on white actually can show through, but nude blends right in. This is my favorite nude bra!

Favorite Wears: Summer Work Attire

Summer work outfit for hot days and cold air conditioner

Summer work wear is the hardest for me to get right without looking frumpy or boring. It's hot outside, freezing around certain parts of the office and a bit warmer at my desk because I'm by some windows.  It's all about light pieces with coverage and an easy tag-along layer for me.

I'm especially loving the wide leg cropped pant trend right now, because it's the perfect amount of coverage to keep the frost from the air conditioning at bay, while easy and breezy to let the heat out.  And a lace top is the perfect shirt.  It provides coverage but with longs of airy holes. :) When that's not warm enough, I always grab my denim jacket to keep on hand.

What are your mixed temperature summer work attire outfit tips?

P.S. this purse is one of my Nordstrom half yearly sales purchases and it's the perfect everyday size and style. It's sold out right now across most sites, but found it here if you're interested!  Here are a few similar ones, too: smaller version herein cherry wood (on sale!), and shoulder version.

Favorite Wears: Neutrals for Travel

I shared a few tips and a more casual look for work travel earlier this week.  Here is another easy travel work featuring all neutrals that you could easily wear any of the pieces in a different way on the same trip - like this blouse, untucked with jeans and the same jacket would totally different!

Another tip, that I didn't include earlier this week, is to make sure you pack materials that won't wrinkle (or at least too badly).  This skirt is a faux-suede, and I pack it by rolling it. A sweater skirt is also a great option - no wrinkles there!  Plus, skirts (and dresses) don't take up much space, and tights certainly don't take up much room (though annoying to put on!).

P.S. These are the boots I alluded to earlier this week, too. They are SO comfy, so I feel pretty safe packing - and they go great from day to night.

What is your favorite piece to pack for travel?

Favorite Wears: Work Travel Look + Tips

I can't believe how fast February flew by - woosh!  And now it's about to be March, and I'm not quit ready for it!  March is a busy travel month for me - all work related. So I thought I would show you some work travel outfits that have really worked out well for me.

I always struggle packing for any trip - without taking my whole closet - but especially work trips.  Here are a few tips:

1. Pick a color scheme so you can mix and match without having to pack a ton. I typically wear more neutrals when I travel - specifically black and white, and lately green has been my main color of choice.  It really goes with so much!

2. Pick your comfiest shoes that you've worn several times before (no time to be breaking in your new shoes).  I never know how long I'll be on my feet or how far I'll be walking, so I stick to my work-appropriate flats that look good with pants and dresses/skirts (like these!). I have about two pairs of heels I will bring for fancier work events or nights if I have room (these are my current fav).

3. Always bring workout clothes. Even if you don't think you'll have time - you either might find time, or you can change into them to wear them on the plane home (so much more comfy!).  I also double up my workout clothes as jammies to save space in my luggage/carry on.

4. Design outfits around layers - you can wear the same jackets or sweater cardigans over lighter pieces that are easier to pack. Plus, you never really know how hot/cold the buildings will be.  One meeting, I'm in short sleeves, then another, I have my jacket on!

5. Keep your accessories light. Mostly, this just saves time and energy - as packing all your jewelry in an organized way so nothing gets tangled usually takes up most room than its worth. I wear my favorite studs, necklace and ring while I travel and the rest of the trip.  If my travels are for a fancier event, I might pack ONE statement piece.

Do you have any work travel tips?

Favorite Wears: White Dress for Work

A dress, comfy-but-awesome shoes and your favorite everyday bag is all you need to pull this perfect-for-work, spring outfit together.  I tend to gravitate toward lighter colors when the weather gets nice, and so I especially like how this white dress is just a notch more sophisticated and perfect for a work meeting.

I've been wearing these low-wedge, lace up shoes everywhere!  They are so comfortable, and you already may know that I'm obsessed with this season's biggest shoe-trend, the lace up, so the pointed-toe gives these a more professional twist.

What's your favorite spring/summer work outfit?
