Fall Apple Picking!

Oh, it's a seasonal delight!  Seriously, I love apple picking and I've been antsy to get the family out to the apple orchards, something we had fun doing this with Liam last year, and excited to introduce sweet baby Nora to the wonders (and blueberry picking was a hit a couple months ago).  It was a beautiful weekend here in Kansas City last weekend, so we headed to Weston, MO for our first trip to Red Farm Barn (besides of a wedding I attended there a few years ago).  I love this place! It's full of barn animals (piglets!), pumpkins, tractor rides, pony rides, apple orchards, apple donuts (!!), and more. 
I'm not sure who had more fun checking out all the animals, me or Liam, but I know we all had fun picking (and eating) apples, Nora included.  She was anxious to get out of her stroller, straining her neck to see what big brother was getting to do. When I got her out to carry her closer, she lunged for an apple.  For a girl who isn't too keen on solids (though we're having some progress, as seen here), she couldn't get that apple to her mouth fast enough.  
She proceeded to crawl under the apple trees, taste-testing practically every fallen apple (quicker than I could stop her, though I wasn't too concern about it since they had told us the apples were safe to eat straight from the tree, as they don't spray the fruit!).  She quickly moved on to trying to eat grass, while Liam took a break from all his hard work to enjoy the fruits of his labor (literally!).   You can see some of our photos from our fun below (outfit details at the bottom).

A Fall-Time Must: Apple Picking!

This past weekend, we went apple picking at Cider Hill Family Orchard in Kansas City, KS on what could not have been a more beautiful day!  We headed there before the rush and Liam's nap in the morning and took advantage of the fall-like weather.  We spent an hour running through the orchards,  plucking apples from the trees, playing catch with the ones that had already fallen (Liam's idea) and ultimately filling our peck full of Gold Rush apples. 
After we'd gathered all the apples and more that we'd ever need in the next few weeks, we indulged on apple cider slushes and donuts.  Liam was a big fan of both and totally commandeered my slushy.  He also couldn't wait until we got home before digging into our freshly picked apples and ate one while I was paying for all our apple goodness.  We've pretty much been eating apples since.  You know that saying, "an apple a day...", well we've got that covered. This is a definite fall must-do (if you can squeeze it in before apple season is over by the end of October).  Most of our fun was had just being outside amongst the pretty scenery and on the hunt for good apples... picking apples and going home with them was just a bonus.

Apple Picking in Weston!

A couple weeks ago, we started September off with some early apple picking.  This year, we went with friends to Weston Red Barn Farm to spend the morning no just picking apples, but seeing the farm animals, riding a tractor and eating lunch (get the pulled pork sandwich, so good)/slurping down apple cider slushies.  It was a beautifully cooler morning (for early Sept) and the kids were in their element - getting to run around and get dirty!!
Fall is so perfect for us because we can get outside and do all those fun fall things (see my favorite 7 things to do here).  And both of my kids love to be outside exploring and, as Liam says, "find nature" (now if only the mosquitos, or chiggers, or oak-mites, or whatever they are would go away).  As the kids get older this kind of stuff is so important - to see where our food comes from, get them involved in picking apples, taking them home and cooking with them later, and spending time as a family.

Of course - after a morning picking apples - we had tons to take home!  I used them last weekend to make apple pie - and had the kids (+ Liam's friend!) help!  They loved taking turns pouring the ingredients into the bowl, stirring and then, of course, the end result!

Fall Apple Picking with the Family

Fall is seriously my favorite season! It's such a beautiful time to get outside and experience everything your town has to offer! One of our favorite things to do is to go apple picking!  We go every year (you can see last year's adventure here!) - and it's the perfect morning activity to do with little ones. 
One of our very favorite Kansas City local apple orchard is Cider Hill Family Orchard.  Last time we were here, Nora was still in my belly and Liam was half as tall (tear, tear).  We went back this year because we had such fond memories!  It's a bit smaller, not as crowded (but I still suggest going early!), there is a tractor ride out to the apple fields that we knew LIim would LOVE and the apple cider is too good.

And oh my, they have the best apple cider donuts and slushies you could ever want. So we got it all, plus some lunch and perched right on a curb - ate and danced.  Danced because they had music going, and it was just such a perfect fall morning/midday!
