8 Not Boring Neutral Outfits

Have you been drawn to neutral colors and outfits lately? While brights will never be out, the shift towards normcore (basic neutral, average-looking clothing) has people digging out and pairing together neutral after neutral pieces. I use to think wearing neutrals were so boring, but after feeling the shift myself, it's been super fun to challenge myself to still wear something that looks styled, put together and unique, even if the color pallet was pretty simple.

I wanted to share some outfit ideas to help you style your own neutral pieces. Here are eight awesome neutral outfits from some of my favorite bloggers (and myself) to give you ideas how to style your simple colors for an any anything but simple outfit:

1. Psyche is one of my favorite style bloggers. Her outfits are always on point. I love this chic, flirty and perfectly accessorized outfit of hers (see more of it here)!  When you're wearing neutrals - you have the opportunity to pile on more accessories and add a bold lip and shoe with no worries of overdoing it!

2. Talk about a luxe-looking outfit! You might not even notice the all neutral thing going on with Melanie's pretty look. She rocks winter white perfectly with subtle varying shades and embellished pants. This outfit would be so fun for a girls night out or date.

3.  Neutrals are a great base for letting patterns pop. Shanna's black and white wide stripes are bold and bright next to her warm, camel blazer (which honestly, is a must in any woman's closet - similar option here).  Her pumps and bag just pull the look together and she's ready for anything.

4. I love Erin's layers here! She unexpectedly layered a cape scarf over her leather jacket, and the white base makes these wintery pieces totally pop.  She wears really nice quality pieces to make everything seem really rich. This is such a perfect outfit for work to date!

5. As we've established, I've been loving neutrals myself.  I had fun styling an unexpected accessory in this outfit (as shown in more detail here).  Mixing an oversized bow-tie and pops of gold made this work outfit a bit more edgy.

6. Another reason I love neutrals? It's the perfect playground for mixing patterns just like Veronika is doing with this cute stripe + polka dot look!  She is actually a pro at styling neutral colors and has tons of cute outfits, such as this.

7.  Caitlin looks polished and ready for anything in these black pants and light-neutrals.  Talk about a perfect day to night outfit with a statement. Those earrings and her layers transform this outfit from basic to stunning.

8. Meagan is one of my favorites for coming up with unique pairings and trying new things. I adore her style and love that she has fun with fashion. You don't even notice this outfit is composed of neutrals because of all the different textures and pop of pattern.

Have an awesome neutral outfit of your own or inspiration to share? I'd love to see it! Tag me on social channels (@ChasingDavies) or link to it in the comments below!

Favorite Wears: How to Style a Jumpsuit

Loft Lace Jumpsuit wearing for a party

I wanted to switch up my holiday party wear and do something different than a dress or skirt - or sequins for that matter. That didn't leave a whole lot of options for my work cocktail party that was mostly fancy.  So... thanks to all the major sales running rampant, I snagged this jumpsuit with lace detail for 50% off and it was the perfect dress alternative.

I was antsy to wear my new leopard coat (that I've been wanting for YEARS, also snagged at a heck of a deal with all these sales...only $80 & you can take 20% off with code DECEMBER20 now through 12/20 here!), and thought an all black one-piece was the perfect backdrop to add that pop too. It's warm, too, so that's a bonus.  This outfit was fun and comfortable to wear - and while peeing wasn't the quickest, the jumpsuit was surprisingly easy to get on and off!

What are you donning to this seasons holiday parties/new year's eve night out?  Any other ideas besides dresses/skirts?

{Outfit Details: Jumpsuit, Coat, Wedges - J.Crew (these metallic pumps are cute!), Clutch - Kate Spade (ebay, similar one here and affordable option here), Lips}

Top it off for Fall

Something that makes me want to live in a pedestrian-geared city more than anything... the need and ability to wear hats on a more-regular basis.  Something about walking from your house, to your garage, into your car, then directly to the office or Target or store doesn't makes wearing a hat very needed. And I'm talking wide brim and fedora type hats, not so much for warmth (maybe a little bit?), but as an accessory.

It totally works for these New York and other city type ladies as part of their outfit in a totally not awkward way. For me, leaving in the middle of the country, when I wear any one of my Fall hats (not talking pool and beach wear) I get weird looks.  For you more suburban living ladies, how do you feel about wearing hats as part of your outfit?

Some hats I'm totally eying and definitely going to get one anyways...

Favorite Blogger Outfit: My Kinda Print Lovin' Lady!

This is a girl after my own heart.  Shelly from GS Lillian Daily DOMINATES print mixing in this amazingly lux-looking outfit.  Even better?  It's all from Target... Um, I faint.  I love it so.

Shelly was also so kind to answer a few questions, mainly I was curious to learn more about how she gets dress int he morning (and therefore channel her creativity):

What is your numero uno inspiration for putting together such creative outfits - if you had to pick just one?
Shelly: Did you mean just two?!?  There are really two that carry pretty equal inspiration…J Crew catalogs and other bloggers.  I do buy a lot of clothes from J Crew, but mostly I try and put together similar outfits with what I have.  As soon as I get a new catalog I start pulling out the outfits I am going to try and replicate, I even find inspiration in the Crew Cuts section!  I especially love the way they pull together unexpected color combinations and textures.  As for bloggers, I don’t know I ever got dressed before I discovered you guys.  Oh yeah, it was yoga pants and tank tops…

(Yes, I meant two, obviously...and I totally do that too with my J.Crew Catalogs.  Going to have to pay more attention to the Crew Cuts!)

How do you go about picking out your outfits?  Night before, in the morning, in advanced, stock pile of outfits, etc?
In the morning for sure.  I would love to be able to pick out things in advance, but I never know what I will want to wear.  This is particularly troublesome when travelling, especially when I get somewhere and think, “who the heck packed my suitcase?”  I do spend many a night falling asleep while stock piling.

When and why did you start a blog?
I started my blog about 2 years ago because it was something I thought I needed to do for my business.  It was very superficial and I really didn’t know what I wanted or was supposed to be doing.  As I started reading more blogs I found that I was definitely drawn to blogs that featured real people, real clothes, and real thoughts.  Then I kind of pulled it all together, added the jewelry I design, and that’s what my blog is about...mostly.

Where are your favorite places to shop for clothes?  Are you a online shopper or in-person kinda lady?
I am definitely an accessory person, but I do like clothes too.  So here’s the breakdown for those of you who love math:
40% J Crew-mostly online, mostly pencil skirts and tops, some dresses
40% Target-in store CLEARANCE RACK.  I can’t tell you how many amazing $10 dresses and skirts I have found here.  I quite honestly stalk this section.
5% GAP/ON/BR-online, usually jeans and pants only because they have a tall section.  If I pass by one in person I will check out their clearance racks.  Have I mentioned I love a good deal?!
5% other-Anthro, H&M, etc.  This usually happens when another blogger features something I can’t live without.  I rarely venture out beyond the stores above for clothes.

(Love math, love the breakdown. I'm going to have to start paying more attention to Target Clearance racks!)

What Fall trend are you currently loving/plan to love once the weather behaves?
Oh gosh, can I have one of everything?!?
Saturated colors, healed loafers (which I already bought), and colorful pumps.  Oh, and one more thing, I have no idea if it’s a trend, but I am dying for some over the knee NAVY boots.  DYING.  I even bribed my readers with jewelry if they helped me find them!!  But, since I can’t find them anywhere, it might just be me…

And she's funny, too!  Guys - Go visit Shelly at GS Lillian Daily!

Favorite Blogger Outfit: Veronika's Blushing Interview

Veronkia has instantly made me regret getting the orange version of this super Target dress.  She rocks the turquoise version with nude and brown accents. Check out her cute outfit and interview with Veronika of Veronika's Blushing.

Her Outfit Deets:
Dress- Target
Belt- J. Crew
Shoes- Max Studio @ Zappos.com
Cardigan- Zara
Bag- Tory Burch Reva Clutch

Now take a second to read a bit more about Miss Veronika...

What made you start blogging?
Veronika: During and after planning our wedding, I was getting a lot of emails and messages asking me about hair, makeup and my favorite products, which inspired me to want to create a place where I could talk about those things and connect with other women who shared the same passion for all things girly.  I also love to write and blogging was a great outlet for me to write in a more casual, personal way.

What is the best or your favorite thing that has come from blogging for you?
Veronika: It's the community!  I absolutely love that the fashion, beauty and wellness blogging community is such a positive place where women support and uplift each other.  I love that I can connect with other bloggers and my readers and feel like I have a massive circle of friends that I can always count on. I have even met some of my readers and other bloggers in real life and that has been a really positive experience for me.  Overall, the sense of community and support is what I love most, especially in a world where that kind of support can be hard to come by.

When you are not blogging, what are you doing?
Veronika: Working!  I work the typical 40 hour work week so Monday to Friday, that's my main focus.  My husband and I also work out 5 days a week taking bootcamp classes together, so we do that either before or after work which has been fun.  I also love to shop (obviously) and I oftentimes spend weekends browsing the stores or looking for great new home decor.  I also love spending time with family and friends and reading. I always say I wish I made more time to read because I love it. I have a stockpile of about 7 books from Amazon that I have yet to read. I also love going to see movies in the theater, even though theaters are kind of gross.

How would you describe your fashion style?
Veronika: Feminine.  I wear skirts and dresses 90% of the time and I love clothing with feminine touches---whether it's the fabric, a bow detail, lace or ruffles (though, I must say, ruffles have gotten a little too crazy in recent seasons).  Since I work full time, I have to be mindful of how I need to dress for my job, while still maintaining my own personal style.  Dresses are definitely my favorite go-to pieces and I don't mind investing in a beautiful dress---though I also love when I get a great deal on a dress at Target.  On weekends, I tend to be much more casual, especially when running errands. You'll find me wearing sundresses, shorts with off-the-shoulder tees and flip flops or skinny jeans with a loose, flowy top.

If you could only shop at one place for clothing for the rest of your life, where would it be and why (I think mine would be J.Crew)?
Veronika: This is a tough one for me because I like to shop around and I'm not particularly loyal to any one store---I tend to simply buy what I like. If I had to choose, I'd have to say Nordstrom.  I chose a department store because although most of my current clothing isn't from [Nordstrom], I do think they have enough of a variety to satisfy my needs (plus, their dress section---need I say more!?).  A close second would probably have to be Zara---I think that store has clothes that are always evolving and in line with current trends---but they also have lovely classic pieces you can mix  in with trendier ones.

*As a side note on this one---there is NO WAY I could give up my Lululemon!  I am obsessed with their workout gear and wear it everyday!  I even buy some of their tops to wear just casually, to run errands and around the house.

If you could only have one source for fashion/style inspiration, what would it be?
Veronika: Blogs. I was thinking about it the other day---and I feel I get the most inspiration from other women in the blogosphere.  Sure, catalogs, brand websites and magazines are great---but I love seeing how real women style things from their own closets and how they build their wardrobes. I'll oftentimes see a blogger wearing something I own styled in a way I never would have thought to try and I love that it encourages me to be a little more creative with my pairings. I subscribe to about 7 magazines, and none give me as much pleasure as blogs do as far as being a source for style inspiration. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE magazines, but I appreciate bloggers because they are just putting themselves out there saying : "this is me and here's what I'm wearing and how I styled it."  There's power in connecting with and relating to that individual that can't quite happen with magazines---there's no two way interaction with magazines like you can have with bloggers.

If you could trade closets with anyone else, who would it be?
Veronika: Can I pick like seven people!? LOL! I really love Emily's style form Cupcakes and Cashmere. I also love Chloe's style from The Chloe Conspiracy. They both have a unique way of pairing things that I really admire and aren't afraid to make some bold choices.  As far as celebrities go---right now I am obsessed with Kate Middleton.  In fact, my prediction is that she will influence designers to finally start making dresses that are flattering AND long enough to wear to work.  Maybe that's just wishful thinking, but I think her elegant style will influence the fashion world and show designers that even non-princesses need pretty, classy dresses to wear that don't show their bums when they bend over.

Thanks Veronika!

Favorite Blogger Outfit: See Jane Wear Hot Pink + Interview

I'm back on track!  It's been a crazy couple weeks that culminated in a fabulous vacay with some of my very favorite people.  More on that later.  Today, Favorite Blogger Outfit weekly feature is back, AND with an interview.

Even more exciting... today it's Anna Jane, of See Jane, rocking a fabulous neon stripe pink dress with a pop of yellow.  I immediately feel in love with this dress (stripes + neon = <3) and look the moment I saw it.  Even better, she scored this dress on Ebay.  I always forget to shop Ebay.  It's a good reminder to always check there first for an item or something similar, even if last season's or year's items, and save some bucks.

Now you should definitely take a sec to read a little bit more about sweet Anna Jane:

What made you become a blogger?  Specifically, a style/fashion blogger?
Anna Jane: Fashion and style have always been an interest of mine ever since I was a little kid.  However, I honestly started the blog on a complete whim.  I had read some others once in awhile but I started it on a random Saturday while I was home visiting my dad who was sick.  It became a great way to escape from my corporate job and to really embrace my interests.

What is the one thing you do or wear to make most outfits complete before leaving the house?
Anna Jane: These days, I don't feel fully dressed without my engagement ring (and now wedding band), but I especially feel naked without earrings.  I don't wear dangly ones or anything too obvious, but if I don't have a pair of studs in I feel very self-conscience, oddly enough!

If you could only have one source for fashion/style inspiration, what would it be?
Anna Jane: Definitely blogs.  The more I read them, the more I'm inspired by normal girls putting themselves out there for the sake of style.  I'm continually amazed by everyone's unique style and I feel like my own style has evolved thanks to personal style blogs!

Are you an online shopper or in-store kinda girl?  Why?
Anna Jane: I'm both, but these days I'm leaning towards online.  It's mostly due to the fact that I travel a lot for work and I don't have the time to stop into stores after work.  That way, I can order things online and it'll be waiting for me upon my return.  That being said, nothing beats going into a store, seeing and touching the clothes/accessories, so I'll always love "in-person" shopping for that reason.

Where is (are) your go-to shopping place(s) or site(s)?
Anna Jane: I love Gilt Groupe, Shopbop, and Zappos for online shopping.  For in-store, nothing beats J.Crew, H&M, and Nordstrom.

What is your biggest weakness when it comes to fashion?  Something you just can't say no too.  Mine is stripes. hah!
Anna Jane: I love stripes, too!  I honestly cannot resist stripes or polka dots.  I've always been a fan and I feel like they're always in style.

Anna Jane's Outfit Deets:
J Crew dress (via eBay)
Corey Lynn Calter belt (from a dress)
 unknown (old) necklace
Rebecca Minkoff purse

Favorite Blogger Outfit: Midi Love

I'm evolving this feature - whenever I can, by adding an interview with the favorite blogger outfit of the week!  So make sure to read my interview with Jentine below the photo!

The midi is everywhere this season.  I've already told you how much I love it (longer skirt lengths - yay!).  But one look at Miss Jentine from My Edit, and you'll love it too!  She rocks a thrifted bright purple midi skirt that I wish I could get my hands on!

 {Her outfit deets: Blouse, skirt, purse and white necklace - thrifted, Shoes - French Connection, Necklace - Banana Republic}

Interview with Jentine from My Edit:

Q: What is your process for picking out outfits like?
Jentine: I try to pick out an outfit in advance if I have somewhere to go. It saves time and the inevitable break-down when an outfit doesn't look quite as I planned. I definitely have my go to last minute outfits (that often involve my Gap slim jeans and brown boots...) but otherwise, I will plan in advance just by playing in my closet, having a glass of wine (optional) and trying stuff on. Being prepared cuts down on marital strife and general lateness...:)

Q: If you could only utilize one source to find fashion inspiration, what would it be?
Jentine: B. Jones Style. I always mention her but she can dress.

Q: How did you get into thrifting?  I really want to get started myself, but I'm a bit overwhelmed by it.  Any tips for beginners?
Jentine:  I grew up with second hand clothes because money was tight. I thrifted sporadically as I got older but it wasn't about until 2 years ago that I got... well, addicted. It is the best way to shop trends and be unique! Shameless self plug but check my thrift tips on my blog especially these one (here or here) if you are not sure where to start in the world of thrift.

Q: What is your favorite piece to wear? Why?
Jentine: I love a dress! It highlights the good stuff and hides the bad stuff. And I can find a plethora of them in the thrift store (ha... love using that word...plethora).

Q: Do you have a favorite outfit that you've worn? If so what and why?  If not, why not?
Jentine:  Picking a favourite outfit is like picking a favourite cat...

Thank you Jentine!

Favorite Blogger Outfit: Orange Envy

Dude. I'm totally jealous of Linda's, of Little Tin Soldier orangey-red skirt.  Ok, let's be honest, most of the time I'm pretty jealous of anything she wears - as it's always fashion forward with a classic spin.  But her vintage skirt has me lusting after the current J.Crew Dorrie Skirt that, at least in my size and in the modern red color, is on back-order.  I have it coming to me, but not until May 23rd. :(

Anyways, not only is Linda so well-dressed all the time, her photos give me the feeling that she just woke up and effortlessly threw together fabulous outfit morning after morning.
