Favorite Wears: Transition into Spring

Technically Spring has begun, but in Kansas City, it's here and then gone and then here and then gone again.  Just last week is snowed!  Like big, fluffy, beautiful flakes of damn snow (over it).  But the day before that... it was freaking 75 degrees, naturally.

So I'm tiptoeing my way into Spring fashions starting with white jeans and layering options.  Stripe off the faux-fur, black jacket and this white and light striped look is Spring into Summer approved.  But I love how the black helps anchor it for the still-sometimes-cooler-weather.  Options, people!

Also! Another craving for Spring - lace up shoes of any kind (I already have to many).  You can see these lace-up black flats worn here, too (and get a better look at them there, too!).  What are your favorite new items for Spring??

Handling Food Allergies with Little Ones!

It was super scary, but last summer, Nora and my Mom were having their weekly "Mimi Day" (both of my children's favorite day of the week!) and exploring a local Farmer's Market. My mom gave Nora just one bite of a locally and organically made protein ball - just one bite, and super healthy!  About 20-30 minutes later she started to break out in red blotches all over her face and and body!  Thankfully, there was a CVS near by that my mom walked over to and bought some children's Benadryl, while I called our pediatrician (he's pretty much on speed dial).

Of course, as parents (and grandparents!), we freak out more than nurses and doctors - and ours quickly calmed us down. They gave us the right dosage of Benadryl to give Nora and let us know what to watch out for - wheezing/breathing problems and/or swelling around the mouth/face primarily since she was awake and talking just fine, which never became an issue.  And the Benadryl did the trick, calming her red blotches down quickly.  You can get ahead of the freakout and learn about the signs/symptoms, and how to prevent food allergies here!

This was a first for us - and we think (though still not 100% sure) it was the organic honey used in the protein ball that cause the reaction.  Honey is one of the only items recommended not to give a child before they turn one (Nora was almost two), and she's had other items with honey in it that hasn't caused issues before. So for us, it is just about monitoring what she is eating, seeing if it has honey included and then keeping an eye on her.  She's only had one other reaction, and it was very minimal.  Mostly, at this point, we just avoid honey!

But, we still eat protein balls - we just make our own and sub out honey for vanilla!
Here's our recipe for non-honey peanut butter protein balls:

1 Cub Raw Oats
3 TBSP of Peanut Butter (or Almond Butter for those w/ penaut allergies)
1 Banana
2 TBSP of Ground Chai Seed (or you can use whole)
3/4 TBSP of Vanilla
1/2 TBSP of Cinnamon
1 TBSP of Cocoa Powder
Optional: Milk (I use Almond Milk to wet-up the mixture)
Optional: Mix-Ins, like Chocolate Chips

I start by mixing everything in a bit bowl - but you could add it all directly to a blender or food processor if you find that easier.

After all the ingredients are added, I transfer the mixture into the food processor and blend.  Depending on how the mixture is sticking together - I'll add a bit (1/4 cup, maybe) of Almond Milk (currently loving this Almond Coconut blend) directly to the food processor and blend more.

Because I like to find any reason to include chocolate, I transfer the mixed up mixture back to the same bowl as before and add in chocolate chips.  You could also add in raisins, nuts, etc.  Mix it up!

After I spoon out and plop onto wax paper, I cool them down in the refrigerator while my kids ask me 1,000 times if they're ready yet. I usually take them out too early (like 2 minutes later) and plop one on a plate for each of them to enjoy....

...like a puppy?

Food allergies are no joke - so no matter if your kids have them or not, their friends might. “The number of children with food allergies has increased over the last decade and every six minutes one child may have a severe anaphylactic reaction,”  said Chitra Dinakar, MD at Children's Mercy.

How do you handle food allergies, whether it's in your own family or within your circle of friends/daycare?

Favorite Wears: Casual Sweatshirt Dress

This is the easiest, and yet chic enough for a weekend brunch.  These days I'm running on less than average sleep, so simplicity is key.  Anything I can easily grab, layer with the same simple gold jewelry I've been consistently wearing and pull together with a swipe of bright lipstick and hat is on repeat.

So, I'm curious, how many hours of sleep a night do you need?  I've been only getting about 6 - which is just enough to get by, but not enough to feel energized nor healthy. I just feel tired all the time. I think I'm someone who needs closer to 8, so I'm working on it. :)  Of course, 6 hours is a far improvement from when the kiddos were babies (though we've actually had some toddler sleep regression to make me painfully recall those all nighters from the baby stages), so at least there is that!

Despite toddler sleep regressions (night terrors, I think), my biggest challenge is shutting down my mind at night.  My creativity typically comes alive, I get sucked into work and trying to get stuff done.  The work is endless. :)  So, tell me if you have any tricks for getting on a better night time/sleep routine so that I can get more sleep!  Please!

Country Club Plaza x Chasing Davies: Spring Shopping + GIVEAWAY!

I had the best weekday afternoon a couple weeks ago! One of my most dearest friend came into town, so I took the afternoon off work to spend with her.  It's amazing how fast 6-7 hours goes when you're having fun, and man, our afternoon into evening flew by!

We had so much we wanted to do - have lunch, drink a few fun drinks, get our nails done and shop for some spring fashion and beauty updates.  So, we hit up the Plaza  - parking once and walking from one thing to another, my most favorite way to do so many things (I hate driving, parking, driving and parking again... and if you are planning to have a few drinks, well you know!).

So, we started our day date for lunch at Coal Vines for pizza and salad.  We had a few fun drinks (including champagne), because why not?!  And sat by the windows soaking in the early spring sun. It was a great way to talk and catch up before hitting up the rest of the Plaza.

Before we got too deep into shopping, we took a bottle of champagne to Plaza Nails (pro tip: you can bring your own drinks, but you should also bring your own cups!) to get manicures and pedicures.  The latter was in serious need after the winter months behind us.

With fresh nails and a few drinks, we were ready to shop.  I typically do most of my shopping online, so I forget how fun it is to shop with a friend - and Katie is one of my most favorites to shop with!  She is that friend that gives you real thoughts so there is no buyers remorse later.  And Katie was shopping for a top for her upcoming family photos (see them here!).

We ended up getting the same shoes from Evereve... they are so comfortable and right on trend with the lace-up! :)  Clearly, since we both got them!  We each got a few other things from there, too - I will be showing you a dress, perfect for spring into summer, soon!  If you haven't ever checked out this cute store (it was my first time), you should totally do so!  They have great brands, lots of different price points and offer clothing, shoes and accessories/jewelry!

We couldn't just update our closets - we had to stop into Sephora, too.  I'm really excited to try out a new red lipstick that I picked up. I got the Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Underage Red and have been loving it.

After all that, we weren't done yet! We met another friend on the roof of O'Dowd's to watch the sunset.  It was a pretty night - and I love this vantage point!  It was such a great day into evening - and I can't wait to do it again soon!
