Favorite Wears: Leopard Sweater

For me, leopard has acted as a staple pattern for every season over the last decade, and come fall and winter, leopard sweaters are a must.  They are my go to for elevating any ol' basic jeans and sweater look, but they can also be very fun mixed with bright colors and dressed up. To me, leopard is part of the neutral family, but a bit more fun. :)

While leopard is a long-time safety net, I set out this season with a goal of updating my black bootie situation. The style has gone towards a more pointed (or at least almond) toe and travels up the ankle a bit higher.  But thankfully, the sturdy and comfortable black heel is here to stay.  I found this pair that are not only up-to-date and sleek, but also comfy!

What are your old fall/winter staples and new updates in your wardrobe?

Favorite Wears: A Fall Rainbow

Fall is a great time to play with color! Rich hues are in, but this season, pastels and bright whites remain. And when you bring the two worlds together, a simple jeans and a sweater feels elevated.  I love keeping outfits simple, but in order to keep from looking sloppy (which I'm good at that, too), I like to pair unexpected color combos, great fits and a pop of something.

I'm all about the rainbow sweaters/tops this season - mostly in part to Halogen x Atlantic-Pacific's new collection at Nordstrom.  Her collection hits it right on the mark for me. The fun prints, bright colors, rich hues and unique patterns are all I need this season. And these jeans (similar) - my new favorite brand since discovering this pair a couple months ago.

Your 2018 Fall/Winter Denim Guide!

Come colder weather, denim is a great option to help keep warm. I've only recently become a more avid jeans wearer because of all the different options, cuts, washes and styles that now exist. Denim is a staple I now feel like I can have a little more fun with, than just a basic.

Now into the fall season, I am on the look out for new jeans to spice up my fall and winter looks. I visited Simply Be, because they have a lot of different styles, and you can figure out what flatters you the most.  You want to also make sure you get the most out of a new pair of jeans, so making sure your new jeans will fit in with your existing wardrobe (i.e. if you have a lot of looser tunic style tops, skinny jeans make for a good bottom to fit underneath that style of top vs. if you have more fitted, cropped tops, try pairing with wide leg and high-waisted pairs of denim).

For me personally, I typically like a more fitted jeans, as I like to wear looser and layered tops. I'm sharing some of my own personal style wearing different jeans, as well as some overall trends I'm excited about:

Back to the 90s
The tapered and straight-leg jeans are also inspired by 1990s fashion. They look especially good with the big blouses that finish mid-thigh. But also that 90s wash - a more acid wash (I'm wearing a toned down version above).

Flared and bootcut jeans
If you like bootcut and flared jeans, you have plenty of choices and these cuts work really well for straight and curvy women alike!  I'm especially excited to try this style (a departure from the skinny cut I've been wearing the last decade). The right pair of bootcut jeans can easily be dressed up by wearing them with a crisp tailored blouse and even a blazer (for work or not). But they look just as good when you worn in a casual way, like with t-shirt and jacket.

The 100% denim look
The all-denim look never completely goes out of fashion.  So, it comes as no surprise to see denim jackets, tops and skirts still all the rage and popping up everywhere. Just make sure your denim pieces have different shades to allow for contrast (like my lighter denim top with darker jeans).

Button detailing
This year, quite a few designers have incorporated a few extra details into their designs. For example, buttons on the fly zipper or two or three buttons at the waist. Once again, high-waisted jeans are set to be very popular. A lot of these feature a deep waistband, which is ideal for this multi-button trend.

Colored denim
Looking at the looks from fashion week this year, it is obvious that we can expect to see more colored denim being made available this year.  I personally love a burgundy jean!

Two-Toned Denim
Maybe my favorite denim trend is the two-toned denim coloring. This is a great way to ease away from your traditional denim and try something subtly new!

Favorite Wears: Jeans with an Edge

Jeans with an uneven edge outfit

I'm LOVING all the new and fun styles of jeans this season. It really makes them a bit more fun and more of an eye-catching piece to an outfit than just the basic - and my favorite are these uneven hemmed jeans (by my favorite jeans brand).  These ones show off my favorite part of my leg... a tiny sliver of ankle. ;) hahahaha - but really, I love the way they look with all shoes - especially my black sneaker slides (they come in a lot of colors, and are very comfortable).

This is one of my few fall outfit uniforms: a long cardigan with a t-shirt over jeans (or leggings) with comfy footwear. Perfect casual work day and weekend look in my book. And you can really change it all up easily by the style and look of the t-shirt, color of the cardi and/or pants.

What is YOUR fall uniform??

Favorite Wears: Off the Shoulder

This has been the summer of the bare should, and I have dabbled a bit in the trend, too. I specifically like the look with a loose and flowy body to offset the uncovered skin atop. This is the perfect weekend top, and I even have this bare-shoulder dress coming my way for a wedding guest dress option later this summer.

But what do you think about wearing this kind of top to work? I work at a casual, creative place - and I've seen many of this style there.
Are you wearing the off the shoulder trend? Curious how you've styled it or particular tops you're loving!

Favorite Wears: Satin Duster / Pajama Trend

I've been contemplating the lingerie/pajama trend for awhile now, and wondering if it's something I'd even try. But I found this satin-like duster, and reminded me of an old school, pretty robe.  I wore it over a more sturdy look - darker colors and denim to anchor the outfit. And I must say, this robe like item was the perfect added layer for a slightly cooler spring day.

Are you sporting any pajama like items this spring?

Favorite Wears: Work Travel Look + Tips

I can't believe how fast February flew by - woosh!  And now it's about to be March, and I'm not quit ready for it!  March is a busy travel month for me - all work related. So I thought I would show you some work travel outfits that have really worked out well for me.

I always struggle packing for any trip - without taking my whole closet - but especially work trips.  Here are a few tips:

1. Pick a color scheme so you can mix and match without having to pack a ton. I typically wear more neutrals when I travel - specifically black and white, and lately green has been my main color of choice.  It really goes with so much!

2. Pick your comfiest shoes that you've worn several times before (no time to be breaking in your new shoes).  I never know how long I'll be on my feet or how far I'll be walking, so I stick to my work-appropriate flats that look good with pants and dresses/skirts (like these!). I have about two pairs of heels I will bring for fancier work events or nights if I have room (these are my current fav).

3. Always bring workout clothes. Even if you don't think you'll have time - you either might find time, or you can change into them to wear them on the plane home (so much more comfy!).  I also double up my workout clothes as jammies to save space in my luggage/carry on.

4. Design outfits around layers - you can wear the same jackets or sweater cardigans over lighter pieces that are easier to pack. Plus, you never really know how hot/cold the buildings will be.  One meeting, I'm in short sleeves, then another, I have my jacket on!

5. Keep your accessories light. Mostly, this just saves time and energy - as packing all your jewelry in an organized way so nothing gets tangled usually takes up most room than its worth. I wear my favorite studs, necklace and ring while I travel and the rest of the trip.  If my travels are for a fancier event, I might pack ONE statement piece.

Do you have any work travel tips?

3 Ways I Failed in 2016 | A Look Back for a Fresh Start

Every new year, I think about new ideas, goals and resolutions for the new year. I don't formally like to make an acclamation of these to avoid falling on my own sword later. And while most years, I strive to be better than the last, I don't mark my progress.  I'm sure I do actually improve somethings, but I wouldn't really know it.

So, this year I'm taking a different approach and instead of looking ahead, I'm starting fresh this new year by looking back on 2016.  I'm looking back on the areas, the weeks, the months that I was more stressed, less happy, more frazzled and I'm trying to figure out what subtle changes I can make to avoid those extra negative moments (note: not looking to eliminate them, I know the downs are part of life, but this year seemed a bit more excessive then necessary).

After looking back - and looking around - I identified 3 ways I totally failed at in 2016:

1. Work/Life Balance. I let work rule my life last year (and to be honest, the several years prior, but last year it culminated and felt heavier). And honestly, sometimes I liked it. I love working, I love learning new things, I love solving problems , I love getting creative on ways to approach challenges, I love to work. But that became a problem this year. I loved it too much to the point I never said no and I let it take priority.  Then, one day, I didn't love it as much.

Solution: This year, I want to get back and keep loving my job - but I won't let it beat me up. I will plan ahead to use my vacation days, I won't work at night from home everrrrry night, and, while I will stay passionate about my job, I will learn to let things go and move on quicker and improve on enabling and relying on my capable team to do their jobs.  I will let go a little bit.

2.  A Point of View on the Blog.  I was more distant this year here in this space. Some of it was due to the above work schedule, some of it was a lack of passion for this blog, some it was me being lazy. I wrote less, posted way less and when I did either, I didn't say anything unique or open up. This blog is not just about outfits and shopping sales, or even documenting my family adventures just with photos. It's some of that, but needs to be more, more about sharing experiences, recommendations, struggles, the good, the bad - and the why.

Solution: I want to try to be more open here in this space.  I will ask myself why with every post, I will establish a stronger purpose for each post, it will be clear why I am spending time on each post. I still may not post as much, as I will aim for quality of quantity, but I will try to write more with more reason (and not for just more words). I hope that this will make this space more rewarding in the long run - not just for readers, but for me, too. I hope you will keep me accountable by asking for what you might want to see or engaging with me and other readers with your own stories/experiences, as I love learning from you all.

3. Have More Fun with Motherhood.  I'm not sure I have the right words for this one.  But as I look back on 2016 and focus in on the moments of stress and/or anxiety, no matter if it was work, or lack of sleep, or kid tantrums, fear of parenting was at the core of it all. Guilt over working too much and not being home, worry over not being the best mother for my kids - even when I was home/present, fear of my kids' behavior, constant scrutiny over my parenting skills, and concern they were not getting enough of what they need (sleep, right foods, discipline, etc). I focused too much on the negative. We all deal with that stuff in one way or another. I was so focused on what could be wrong, or what wasn't going well, or the days that weren't great that I missed so many of the good.

Solution: I think the two first points and solutions will definitely help here.  Managing my stress and anxiety around work will help me be more present at home when I'm supposed to be off the clock. And opening up more here, will help me vent, connect and relate to others going through or thinking about similar things.

But I know motherhood is hard. Every day is a new challenge, and no kid is the same, no kid requires the same things or type of parenting, and no day is going to be perfect.  I will take advice and articles with a grain of salt. I will ignore the nay-sayers, I will trust my gut.  When it comes to my children - I will trust that I know them best, and when in doubt or unsure - I will just hug them instead of "Googling" or stressing out.  I will take deep breaths. I will lean on my husband when I am at a loss - and know that is ok. I will find at least one small moment as often as I can to connect with them.

I will stare at each of their faces for at least 30 seconds a day (like during dinner or while putting them to bed) to soak in the details as they grow so fast.

And while I have never shamed another mother for something they may be doing that I might not understand, or made another mother feel guilty, I will make sure to be more aware in giving other mothers more smiles when they need it most, encouraging words when they ask for advice or help, or support in any way I can when wanted. We all need support, and not guilt in how we parent/work/live/connect. <3

Do YOU have any failures or solutions to areas of 2016 you wish to improve upon this new year? I'd love to hear any advice for any of mine, too! xoxo

Favorite Wears: Workin'

I've been wearing this blouse a lot this Fall. It's been the perfect piece to wear to work and then transition straight into other things, and believe it or not - it travels well!  These days, I'm dependent on clothing I can travel with - and this blouse has made it with me to Nashville, to San Francisco and back to Nashville, and while it wrinkles, the creases fall out and the blouse has little pleats anyways, so looks part of the shirt!

Other great travel pieces - these high waisted jeans, booties (dress them up or down) and jackets that double as a blazer/cardigan!  And a big bag doesn't hurt! :)

What are YOUR travel clothing essentials??

Favorite Wears: Cold Shoulder

I was skeptical about the shoulder cut-out look - still kind of am, but I love how easy this shirt is, and perfect for summer evenings or cooler days.  The cut outs actually help keep cooler, yet provide modest covering and the detail on this shirt make jewelry not needed. It's easy to pull on over your favorite pair of skinny jeans, or even tucked into a skirt!

So, shoulder cut out top is pretty cool after all. Tell me - are you into this trend? Have you tried it?
